Rrrrrroger (Welsh for Roger) Travis Williams, first started drumming at the age of 13, playing in school band the Aadvarks at Brynhyfryd School in his home town of Ruthin. He left the wilds of North Wales
and joined punk band the Nips, along fellow Welshman, and school band mate Gavin Douglas. Travis left the Nips after 2 years after not seeing eye to eye with front man Shane McGowan. He went on to play with (the) Smart, with Dave Martin and Geoff Myles previously of Chelsea (that's the punk band, not the football team). They supported the likes of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, UFO, Japan, Budgie and Iggy Pop, clocking up serious rock credibility, before joining One the Juggler for the Reading Festival in August 1983. Travis says that One the Juggler were by far his favourite band to play with, and has many fond memories of them. One of them being having their dogs around, Sham had Joby, Lushi, Smidge, and Travis himself had a dog called Cysgu (Welsh for sleep). They were all in the studio, recording 'Far Away (from London)', and the dogs, all chasing each other, burst in through the heavy studio doors!
He has since played with many, many bands including the March Violets, Havana 3AM with ex-Clash member Paul Simonon, Boom Boom Room (with Lushi), UTI, Roger Cook (Cook and Greenway), and Squeeze bass player Johnny Pinko (John Bentley). He's written with Colbert Hamilton (Black Elvis 2000), presented a European music show 'Euromusiques'.
Travis was a pin-up in a teen magazine, in his early 20's, see above!!
In magazine articles around the time of (the) Smart, he cited John Bonham of Led Zeppelin as an influence and his favourite bands were Siouxsie and the Banshees, Japan and the Associates.
He was incredibly hard to find on the internet, because he has gone under so many names! There's Roger Travis, Roger Williams, Roger Ringo, Ringo Watts and Travis Williams and more I expect!
Occasionally Travis comes home to where the heart is, and he'll play covers in his local pub to a loving local crowd, although he resides in West London.
